Nebraska will soon be celebrating its 159th birthday!
To help celebrate the occasion - which is just around the corner (Saturday, February 28th!) - the Nebraska State Historical Society is offering a special free admission day so folks can participate in this special event! Celebration activities are from 9am to 4pm in their respective time zones.
It's an opportunity join in family-friendly activities all across the state, including two locations in the panhandle – one in Dawes County and the other in Morrill County: they are the Fort Robinson History Center just west of Crawford here in Dawes County and the Chimney Rock Ethel S. and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center just south of Bayard in Morrill County!
Activities at Fort Robinson will include a Scavenger Hunt, starting at the History Center! Participants can follow the clues to find state historical markers across the park. You can share your experience on social media by tagging NSHS (@nehistorical) and the NSHS Foundation (@nshsf1942). Once completed, participants can return to the History Center to talk about what they've learned!
At Chimney Rock, Historian Loren Pospisil will present "Winter Travel on the Oregon Trail," the challenges of traveling the Great Platte River Road on the Oregon Trail in winter. The program will begin at 2:00 p.m., Mountain Time.
Similar historical activities and fun events are slated for the Nebraska History Museum in Lincoln, Norris House in McCook, and the Neligh Mill in Neligh.
Remember, there'll be free admission at all sites, so make plans to help celebrate Nebraska's big birthday bash: Saturday, February 28th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All ages are welcome!
